Tsuba. 1993:68

Indirectness can be used as the violation of Grice’s principle (Tsuba. 1993:68). Sometime people don’t want to give information that is not favorable to the hearer or to the speaker. Or, the speaker doesn’t want to give information that may threaten their “face”. The theory about face and politeness is based on Brown and Levinson’s FTA (Face Threatening Act) theory. It is not easy to protect “face” without violating Grice’s principles.
